Thomas Eder Trail Adventure: A Path for Experts at Untersberg

Dare to tackle the Thomas Eder Trail, a route for true mountain professionals that will excite every experienced hiker. Begin your journey comfortably with the Untersberg cable car to the mountain station and follow the Alpine Club path (Trail 417) to the stunning Salzburger Hochthron. From there, the path leads across the plateau and down into the Mittagsscharte.

The actual Thomas Eder Trail starts branching off to the left and demands all your skills. Along safety ropes, stairs, and through tunnels, you will descend to the fascinating Schellenberger Ice Cave, where exciting tours await you in the summer.

This trail is recommended exclusively for experienced mountain hikers with excellent sure-footedness, no fear of heights, and high physical fitness. Sturdy mountain boots are a must, and extra caution is advised in wet conditions.

Plan between 1.5 and 2.5 hours for this unique mountain adventure. A special highlight after the hike is the Toni Lenz Hut, just a 10-minute walk from the ice cave – perfect for a well-deserved rest.

Directions:

Take the Untersberg cable car to the mountain station. Continue via the Alpine Club path (Trail 417) to the Salzburger Hochthron.

From there, hike down across the plateau into the Mittagsscharte.

Follow the Thomas Eder Trail branching off to the left and descend along the safety ropes through stairs and tunnels to the Schellenberger Ice Cave, where hourly tours take place between June and October in the summer.

Caution: For the experienced only! Suitable only for truly experienced, absolutely sure-footed, vertigo-free, and physically fit individuals.

Sturdy mountain boots required.

Very dangerous in wet conditions.

Hiking time is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

The Toni Lenz Hut is located 10 minutes' walk from the ice cave.
