The Untersberg massif, which spans approximately 70 km², is located in the southwest of the Flachgau region, right on the border with Bavaria. It is accessible via the Untersberg cable car and various hiking trails. The area of the Untersberg stretches from Bayerisch Gmain and Bischofswiesen in the Berchtesgadener Land to Großgmain on the Salzburg side. The Salzburg Hochthron, which is located at 1,853 meters above sea level, is on the Salzburg side, while the Berchtesgadener Hochthron, the highest point of the massif at 1,972 meters above sea level, can be found on the Bavarian side. The Untersberg cable car starts in St. Leonhard near Grödig and leads to the Geiereck, from where, in good weather, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. The view extends from the Rosittal Valley and the Mountain Troops Memorial over the Salzkammergut to the High Tauern as well as the Tennen and Hagengebirge mountains.

In winter, the Untersberg cable car serves as a practical lift for ski touring on the plateau and for snowshoeing, as well as for alpine skiing. Just a 15-minute walk from the mountain station of the Untersberg cable car, a 7.5 km long ski route begins, ending in Fürstenbrunn. From there, the regularly scheduled bus line 35 will take you back to the valley station.
